Self Harm – Why We Do It and How to Stop

Self-harm is usually an attempt to turn emotional pain physical as physical pain can be easier to feel. It’s a release. There are many healthy ways to cope instead of cutting which can become addictive. Screaming into a pillow, hitting your bed or couch with a tennis racket or exercise that will exhaust you are good ideas if you need a physical release. Another type of coping is to create something out of the depression. Use your darkness to create art. Whether it’s painting, poetry, music, drawing, writing, etc. Many artists have tortured souls and they use that to create meaningful work. It’s easier to survive something if you can find meaning in it.
